Post Teaser - The Dynamic World
Teaser – The Dynamic World

We have mentioned before how the map, quests and NPCs in Phobos are all based upon the history and lore of the world. However that is not the end of the story. This is because in Phobos, the world will be a ‘dynamic world’. What this means is that over time, the world will change. Changes will usually be made gradually through regular updates. These changes may be unavoidable from a player's perspective - the will of the Gods, if you like - but in many cases the end result will depend on the actions of players. Allowing players to influence how events turn out is going to be a major part of game content.

As years pass, you will find that the merchant NPCs that you know so well will be replaced by their sons and daughters. New settlements may be built in safe and prosperous areas or around strong guildhalls. Wars may bring fire to the world, shatter cities and force empires to their knees. The Gods may one day be generous and benevolent, but maddened and furious the next. Brave new worlds shall be born. But fragile old ones shall die.

A quiet lodge in Firlow is taken over by a group of orcs.

The dynamic world events (or world evolving events) will help to build communities, friendships and allegiances. Because players’ actions have consequences, and those consequences may change the world forever. The concept of world quests and events isn’t a new one. However we plan to take this concept further than it is being used in MMORPGs at the moment. In doing so, we hope that this will help to make Phobos quite special and much more attractive to play as a 2D MMO.

Yours,

P.S. This teaser has been a long time coming. But expect the next one within the next 2-3 weeks :)

It`s indeed something worth waiting for, but I`ve got a question about that. As you mentioned, the empires can be brought to their knees, so lets say a large city is destroyed (so all NPC`s inside it will die too?), but what about new players then. The one day you can buy something in the city, do quests and various tasks and the other day city is burning and newcomers can`t see it ever again? Unless there will be a `limit` or the world will restore itself to its first stage?

If a city is destroyed it will remain destroyed till it has been rebuild (if that ever happens). Just like in real life, if you didn't visit New Orleans before the storm destroyed it, you'll never get to see how it really was.

Just to add to what Torb said:

In a lot of cases, things like quests and NPCs to buy items will simply change, rather than disappear. Death of intelligent beings like humans and elves in Phobos doesn't work in the way that it does in real life. Just like players, NPCs will often (but not always) be reincarnated when they die.

So an old quest which required players to do certain tasks around the large city might change to doing certain tasks in a refugee town where a lot of the NPCs moved to. You will also find new quests pop up, such as "NPC x wants you to find and return item x from the ruins", or "The invaders of x city might be planning more evil stuff, investigate...", etc, etc.

Having said that, some NPCs will die forever, and many good things about a city will be lost forever. This way players are actually encouraged to defend their cities against invasion and war.

But in case you launch a couple of new servers, will they look like the first server in the beginning or will they look like the old ones look at the moment?

Aha, well that will be up for the Gods to decide ;) But in general, new servers will use an old server as a template.
